Two South Korean companies plan to develop wood pellet industries in West Sulawesi in a bid to produce biomass energy as the country starts to gradually shift from coal-based energy.
Secretary General of the Ministry of Forestry Hadi Daryanto said on Wednesday that the ministry has given permit to two South Korean firms PT Bara Indoco and PT Bio Energy Indoco to open up a 200,000 ha of industrial forest estate in West Sulawesi to support the planned wood pellet industries.
Two companies will invest about US$4 million in the first three years to develop supporting facilities, and will gradually invest another Rp 3 trillion in the following years.
Another South Korean firm, PT Solar Park Energy has also made similar investment in Wonosobo, Central Java, partnering with state-owned company Perhutani, developing a 200,000 ton per year wood pellet industry. (rei)
